Bring on the summer protective styles! Something about wearing braids, the breeze hitting your scalp, and catching the sun rays just feels so refreshing and perfect. It’s the only way it can be described. It’s carefree, low maintenance, quick, and probably one of the more inexpensive protective styles to go with. Not to mention the nearly unlimited options; from hair colors, length, size, and even texture braids can be as simple as you want or you can give the people drama.

One of the reasons I love wearing braids is the ease of caring for my scalp and proper scalp care promotes hair growth. If you dread wash day you’ll love my braid cleaning routine. It’s super quick, refreshing, and keeps your braids looking fresh. In many ways it’s also relaxing but maybe that’s just me. I have 2 versions of the routine and on average it takes about 20 minutes or less. Along with the scalp care I wear 2-3 satin bonnets at night to keep my braids from getting frizzy. I know it sounds crazy to wear so many bonnets but I never wake up with them on the other side of the bed and depending on the size and length they can get too heavy for just 1. I also like to re-dip my braids every 1-2 weeks to keep the ends straight and shiny.

Key Ingredients

Witch Hazel
Peppermint Oil
Clove Oil
Basil Oil
Aloe leaf juice

The Full Routine

  1. Do this at night unless you love the smell of mint and don’t mind it lingering around for a while
Apply ORS Herbal Cleanse Hair and Scalp Cleanse Shampoo all over, cover with a plastic shower cap and wrap with a warm towel and let sit for 10-15 minutes
  2. Using baby washcloths and warm water, wipe to remove the “dry shampoo”. Be sure not to over saturate your braids with water since this can make braids frizzy or fuzzy, focus on the scalp
  3. Massage a thin layer of Virgin Hair Fertilizer all over to moisturize and treat the scalp
  4. Double bag with 2 satin bonnets

The Short-on-Time Method

  1. Spray Dr. Miracles Scalp Care Pre-Shampoo Mist directly to the scalp, cover with a plastic shower cap for 10 minutes. You don’t want the scalp to be dripping wet and you don’t want to wait for your scalp to be dry
  2. Massage a thin layer of Virgin Hair Fertilizer all over to moisturize and treat the scalp
